Who is Lynsay OT supervisor?
Lynsay McFarlane-Shaw
OT Supervisor - Independent Occupational Therapist
I am an occupational therapist who studied at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh and has been a practising clinician for 29 years. I have worked in the NHS in the Northeast of England, Yorkshire, and London for 20 years before setting up my independent practice in London nine years ago, where I continue to support children, young people and their families.
In 2022, I undertook further study in clinical supervision, obtaining a PG Cert in clinical supervision from the University of Derby in 2023. There, I developed a long-arm model of occupational therapy supervision, which I am working on publishing and was able to share at the RCOT CYPF 2024 conference.
My clinical background involves working with children, young people, and their families. My passion for supporting participation, inclusion, and fairness for children and young people has also been reflected in my voluntary work as a school governor, trustee, and welfare officer of local gymnastic clubs in London and Watford.
If you were to ask me, I would proudly say that I am an OT to the core; I can be heard on a podcast stating, “If you cut me in half, like a stick of rock, it would say occupational therapy”.
That does not mean the journey over 29 years has been plain sailing. Having experienced a range of busy services and working in high-demand and pressure situations, clinical supervision has been an essential part of the journey. Like many, this experience has been varied. Life has also had its ups and downs along the way.
When life and work go out of alignment, challenges have been experienced.
I left the NHS experiencing burnout due to work and life demands. Navigating this journey of recovery from burnout to thriving again is where my passion for OT supervision was cemented.

What can I expect?
I offer a person-centred approach to OT supervision. Each session is one hour long and delivered online via Zoom.
Supervision is based on the long-arm model of OT supervision that I developed during my PG Cert in Clinical Supervision. The supervisee’s needs are at the core of each session, so we build everything from where you are.
- The focus may be on personal and/or professional growth and the OT process.
- OT supervision ensures it considers the context of the organisation or business in which you work.
- OT supervision can support independent practice, personal, professional and OT business development needs.
- OT supervision values your CPD needs, experiences, aspirations and application to practice.
- OT supervision values you, the supervisee. It values your personal journey and the varied life roles you hold and empowers you to place your own well-being at the centre of your growth and development.
- OT supervision is valued across the career span, from undergraduates and early career OTs to more experienced OTs, including those heading towards retirement.
What is the format of OT supervision?
- OT supervision can be delivered on a 1:1 basis
- OT supervision can be delivered in a small group (of up to 6) of like-minded OTs
- You will have access to a community of OTs, through messaging in my ‘cuppa and chat’ group space outside of the sessions
- Some therapists choose to have both 1:1 and group OT supervision sessions
- Group supervision for your team can also be arranged, please book a call to chat.
What frequency is OT supervision delivered?
- At some stages of our career, supervision twice a month is beneficial.
- As best practice, many therapists engage in monthly OT supervision sessions.
- Some therapists prefer six-weekly supervision sessions if they work part-time.
- Group OT supervision is monthly.
